Known by its acronym CATL, the company has long been a reliable supplier of batteries to Tesla. This Chinese enterprise boasts cutting-edge, cost-effective battery technology, despite its complex relationship with the United States. Additionally, CATL collaborates with numerous other Western automotive manufacturers.
Despite Tesla reclaiming the throne in the initial quarter of 2024, BYD had briefly emerged as the world's leading EV manufacturer in terms of sales during the final quarter of 2023. However, BYD's sales figures declined by a notable 43% compared to the preceding quarter, indicating a significant shift in the EV market landscape.
Currently, China boasts the largest producers of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, encompassing companies such as BYD and CATL, who are responsible for supplying Tesla with their battery needs. 31st January 2024
Tesla (TSLA) and BYD (BYDDF) stand out as the most prominent electric vehicle manufacturers globally. In the year 2022, China's EV and battery pioneer, BYD, surpassed Tesla in terms of vehicle sales. Specifically, in the category of all-battery electric vehicles (BEVs), BYD emerged victorious in the fourth quarter of 2023. However, Tesla reclaimed the throne in the first quarter of 2024, but there are indications that it might relinquish that position soon.
Tesla collaborates with numerous battery providers, among them its longstanding collaborator, Panasonic, and LG Energy Solutions, who ranks as the second-largest battery supplier globally.
At the conclusion of 2021, Tesla forged a lithium supply partnership with the leading lithium producer, Ganfeng Lithium (OTC Pink:GNENF, SZSE:002460). Pursuant to this accord, the Chinese enterprise commenced delivering its products to Tesla for a duration of three years, commencing in 2022. 20th of May, 2024.
Organizations such as BYD engage in the production of both electric vehicles and their corresponding batteries, thereby facilitating cost reduction and ensuring the integrity of their supply chain. This degree of control within the supply chain positions them favorably in terms of cost-effectiveness, product quality, and reliable supply.
Comparing DCAC and DC-coupling
The Tesla Powerwall utilizes an AC-coupled battery configuration, whereas the BYD models adopt a DC-coupled approach. Essentially, this means that the Powerwall is designed to receive AC power, whereas the BYD models charge directly with DC power derived from the solar panels. Both systems present their unique advantages and disadvantages.
